چکیده

Background: Tobacco dependence remains a significant public health concern. In the United States, cigarette smoking continues to be the leading preventable cause of mortality, accounting for about one out of every five deaths. Exposure to cues associated with smoking results in behavioral, physiological, and subjective effects, including craving. Smokingrelated craving can precipitate smoking in abstinent smokers. There appear to be important gender differences in smoking behavior and response to nicotine. Objective: This pilot study is designed to increase understanding of the neural circuitry underlying nicotine cue-induced craving and to examine possible gender differences. Method: Nontreatment-seeking nicotine-dependent individuals (five males & five females) and healthy controls (five males & five females) participated in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with the presentation of smoking-related cues. Smoking subjects were asked to be abstinent 12 hours before the scanning session. Subjects were assessed for craving, nicotine withdrawal, and CO levels. Results: Preliminary data suggest activation in the ACC, NA, & amygdala with cue presentation in smokers, but not in healthy controls. Conclusion: Given the aforementioned differences in brain activity between smokers and healthy controls, the role of gender in activation patterns will also be explored.

Designing and Evaluation of Reliability and Validity of Visual Cue-Induced Craving Assessment Task for Methamphetamine Smokers

A B S T R A C TIntroduction: Craving to methamphetamine is a significant health concern and exposure to methamphetamine cues in laboratory can induce craving. In this study, a task designing procedure for evaluating methamphetamine cue-induced craving in laboratory conditions is examined. Methods: First a series of visual cues which could induce craving was identified by 5 discussion sessions b...

The effect of ascorbic acid on the acquisition and expression of nicotine-induced CPP in mouse

Increased activity of mesolimbic dopaminergic system within ventral tegmental area (VTA) due to nicotine results in psychologic dependence. It has been argued that function of dopamine receptors could by affected by ascorbic acid (AA). Furthermore, AA can decrease the withdrawal syndrome signs in addicted animals and may postpone the development of nicotine dependence. In the present study, the...

Evidence for greater cue reactivity among low-dependent vs. high-dependent smokers.

INTRODUCTION Cue reactivity paradigms are well-established laboratory procedures used to examine subjective craving in response to substance-related cues. For smokers, the relationship between nicotine dependence and cue reactivity has not been clearly established. The main aim of the present study was to further examine this relationship. METHODS Participants (N=90) were between the ages 18-...

Smoking cue reactivity across massed extinction trials: negative affect and gender effects.

Designing and implementing cue exposure procedures to treat nicotine dependence remains a challenge. This study tested the hypothesis that gender and negative affect (NA) influence changes in smoking urge over time using data from a pilot project testing the feasibility of massed extinction procedures. Forty-three smokers and ex-smokers completed the behavioral laboratory procedures. All partic...
